The International Catholic Union of the Press in Lebanon (UCIP-Lebanon) is Worried about the Laying off Journalists and Asking the State and the Syndicates for Help

UCIP-Lebanon expressed its deep concern over the recent dismissal of dozens of journalists in some Lebanese media institutions. The Union called on the official authorities and professional syndicates to intervene in order to help these institutions keep their pioneering role which is in the heart of Lebanon, the message.

In this context UCIP issued the following statement:

1-     The Union expresses its deep concern over the dismissal of dozens of journalists from Lebanese media institutions, all together given the social and personal repercussions of such incident. Dozens of journalists have become jobless overnight and could no more count on their job to provide for their families.

2-     Such dismissals reveal a structural crisis in some Lebanese media institutions in addition to an already existing economic crisis. In fact, all Lebanese media institutions face big difficulties and cannot mobilize the necessary financing to continue their successful activities. This threatens their independence and their existence.

3-     Journalists are the first victims of these successive crisis that hit Lebanese media institutions which should tackle the root of this problem on more than one field. The first measure would be the direct intervention of official authorities that must support media institutions as it is the case in many Western countries and regularize them in order to guarantee both quality and quantity. Syndicates help is essential in order to protect media institutions, provide moral and financial support and open access to social benefits that are necessary for journalists.

4-     In this occasion, the Union would like to reiterate the importance of having successful media institutions in Lebanon, as it was always the case. These institutions have proven their important contribution in the Lebanese identity. Therefore, the Union raises the alarm and asks the official authorities to provide for these institutions the help and support that are necessary for their success.
